On Sandwiches & The Other End Of The Spectrum

Year: 2007

While most of the prom photos we’ve seen here are glorious because the folks in them VERY CLEARLY took prom VERY SERIOUSLY, that’s not always the case.

Stephanie writes: “Me and my girlfriend at the time. We went with another couple. We didn’t really care about prom, and for dinner we ate sandwiches in my car. I wore silver jelly shoes just because and my dress was four years old, and secondhand at that. My girlfriend rented her tux, which was way too big for her. She insisted on wearing a hat. The two of us and the couple we went with left after about an hour to go smoke and drink beer. It was a pretty decent night.”

I appreciate that, even though Stephanie and her girlfriend didn’t really care about prom, they still bothered with a dress and tux and take a photo. That it’s black and white is even better and more poetic, don’t you think?

I haven’t much else to say, except that I also love that because of their squeezing pose, the top of Stephanie’s dress has been smooshed over to the side, as though her boobs are 2″ to the right of where they should be. And that she doesn’t seem to notice or care. Oh, that we could have all been so cavalier about prom!

Photo (left) is not of Constance, but was featured here.

Promtacular! is in no way a political website, unless you consider “Does Mike have a mullet or not” political discourse.

But we are heavily pro-sequins-and-hairspray, regardless of decade, dress, tux, or gender.

Perhaps you’ve heard the bruhaha surrounding Constance, a teenager from Mississippi who wanted to wear a tux and take her girlfriend to the prom. Rather than allowing either of these things to happen, her school cancelled the prom altogether.

And Promtacular! died a little inside.

But all is not lost.

For one thing, there’s a Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend To Prom fanpage on Facebook with nearly half a million fans from all around the country.

For another, you could check out this awesome Gay Teen pop-culture site by Lee Wind, which is thoughtful, fun, smart and inclusive. He provides a bunch of useful links, clips and summary of the Constance affair.

MOST Promtacularly, you could check out all the amazing photos Lee linked to from Autostraddle of lesbians who were allowed to take their girlfriends to prom, and who have the pictures to prove it. That’s where the AMAZING photo (above) came from, and where many more reside.

Talk about celebrating the awesome.

If you have a same-sex photo from a teen formal that you’d like to contribute to Promtacular!, we hope you’ll do so. Like love, tacky backdrops know no bounds.
